LANSDOWNE, Henry C K Petty-Fitzmaurice (1845-1927). 5th Marquess of Lansdowne. Governor-General of Canada. Autograph Letter Signed to Reay [Donald James Mackay, 11th Baron Reay (1839-1921)], 4 pages 8vo, Quebec, 5 June 1884. A good letter about education in Canada and a forthcoming conference on the subject, and asking for news of home politics. '... Randolph [Lord Randolph Churchill] is getting through his "horses" very quickly, and his audacity will no doubt inspire a certain amount of courage into the conservative section of his party, but I cannot believe that he will be a constant source of strength to them. Gladstone's faults seem to be growing upon him and I am strengthened in the opinion I have always held of of him that he was and is one of the most dangerous and least trustworthy pilots to whom the national ship could be committed. ...'
