ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Composer. Autograph Music Quotation Signed of the opening four bars of The Dream of Gerontius (marked 'Mistico'), dated at Great Saughall, Near Chester, 18 August 1902. 100 x 170 mm. (4 x 6½ inches) on paper ruled in red, evidently from an album (some thinning of the paper not affecting the writing). Elgar was staying at this time with his friend, the Liverpool merchant and patron of music Alfred Rodewald, at Rodewald's holiday home in Great Saughall.
