Declining the invitation to subscribe to the funds of the National Society 'until I see more light than I do at present upon the questions pending between the National Society and the Committee of Council on Education'.

'... I feel at present that the influence of the Society may not be made use of by the Government for purposes calculated to impede the efficiency & freedom of action of Church Schools, with reference to that specific object for which ... the Society was founded; viz. the education of the poor in the principles of the Established Church.'
