Autograph Letter Signed to the Revd J.G. Lonsdale, 4 pages 8vo (notes of identification and receipt on the last page, affecting the signatrue), Lincoln's Inn, 11 April 1849. Declining the invitation to subscribe to the funds of the National Society 'until I see more light than I do at present upon the questions pending between the National Society and the Committee of Council on Education'.
'... I feel at present that the influence of the Society may not be made use of by the Government for purposes calculated to impede the efficiency & freedom of action of Church Schools, with reference to that specific object for which ... the Society was founded; viz. the education of the poor in the principles of the Established Church.'
