'[Sir Anthony Hope] Hawkins has no more sense of the tenue of public life than - shall we say [Sir Frank] Swettenham? and it would be much safer for us if we could retain you; but if he is willing, and you must retire, I do not see how we can improve on him. I have no mortal objection - quite the contrary.'

Together with a letter to the same Sir Henry from Anthony Hope Hawkins, 1 page small 4to, 41 Bedford Square, 16 January 1907, reluctantly accepting the chairmanship.
