MONCK, George, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670). Military & naval commander. Letter Signed ('Albemarle') to John, Lord Barclay and the commissioners of the ordnance, ½-page folio with address-leaf, Cockpitt, 22 February 1666/7. Ordering further arms for the regiment commanded by Lord George Douglas. A strip attached to the left hand side of the document bears notes (ca 1900 or later) relating to Albemarle's career. George Douglas, (later first of earl of Dumbarton), c.1636-1692, had been given permission by Charles I to go to France for five years from 1647. In 1656 he took over the colonelcy of the regiment previously commanded by his half-brothers, Lord James Douglas and Archibald Douglas. [See M.R. Glozier in ODNB]. 'I desire you to cause two hundred muskets with soe many Collars of Bandaliers and one hundred pikes to bee delivered out of his Maj[es]ties Stoares unto the Lord George Douglas or whom hee shall appoint for the use of his Regiment.
