NEWMAN, John Henry, Cardinal (1801-1890). Leader of the Oxford movement, beatified 2010. Autograph Letter Signed ('JHN') to 'My dear William', 1 page 8vo on rather browned and flimsy paper, no place, no date. 'Thank you for your note. As yet no banns have been put up at St Mary's, nor have I heard a word about them. The saying attributed to the Clerk is very unlike him. I suspect "St Mary's" is a generic name standing for "an Oxford parish" - just as all good stories were given to Sheridan or Topham. Yours very aff[ectionate]ly / JHN' [No: 25376]
